"The Architekturmuseum Basel is a privately funded
foundation, presenting a varied sequence of exhibitions on
Swiss and international architecture. The museum was founded in
1984, and thanks to its wide-ranging activities has established
itself as a highly regarded cultural institution within the
growing public debate on architecture.
The exhibition programme is grouped around three principal
themes: Swiss architecture of the classical Modern period is
fundamentally important. Exhibitions on Hermann Baur, Hans
Bernoulli, Le Corbusier, Hannes Meyer or Hans Wittwer analyse
the contribution made by Swiss architecture to Neues Bauen and
trace historical developments. A second principal theme is
contemporary architecture in the international field.
Exhibitions on Wiel Arets, Hermann Czech, Frank O. Gehry,
Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, Rafael Moneo, Luigi
Snozzi or Livio Vacchini provide up-to-date insights into major
contemporary attitudes. Thirdly, various themes from the
architectural periphery are featured. Wide-ranging exhibitions
cast light on the links between fine art and architecture and
address specific themes such as architectural photography,
children's toys, tents or the historical development of models.
The Architekturmuseum Basel is the only institution in
Switzerland to examine architecture so comprehensively.
Publications accompany the exhibitions, developing and
documenting their themes. As a rule there are guided tours for
each exhibition, and usually a lecture, discussion or
colloquium as well, to give additional depth to analysis of the
topic in question. The Architekturmuseum regularly intervenes
in current architectural debate, involves itself in certain
concerns and takes up a critical position with its petitions
and topical presentations, or in the form of the "Preis des
Architekturmuseums", a prize created and first awarded in 1996.
A calendar of all events relating to architecture in
Switzerland appears every two months, exclusively for
architects who give active support to the museum. A 1993
research project produced a comprehensive architectural guide
to Basel and its environs, providing insight into the
historical context.
Basel is an important international intersection point, a
museum, university and trade-fair city at the centre of a
catchment area set in the triangle between Switzerland, Germany
and France, and this has worked very much to the advantage of
the Architekturmuseum Basel. Basel has increasingly established
itself as the architectural capital of Switzerland since the
mid eighties; this is confirmed by the concentration of
international architects' offices (e.g. Michael Alder, Diener
& Diener, Herzog & de Meuron), and by the young and
lively architectural scene."
