”Mauro Galligani is one of the most renowned Italian
photojournalists in the international field. Born in
Farnetella, Siena, he went to work for the Italian Press as a
photographer shortly after he graduated in cinematography in
Rome. In 1964 he worked as a photographer and picture editor
for the weekly review ”Giorno.” In 1970, he moved to Mondadori
and became a part of the Epoca staff where he worked on many
important reportage of events and people all over the world.
From 1984 until 1997 he was a picture editor for Epoca and
Panorama. He collaborated extensively with Life Magazine and
his photos were published in major national and international
reviews. In 1997, during a reportage on Grozny, Galligani was
taken hostage by Checnian rebels and stayed captive for many
weeks. Three years later he returned to the places where he was
held prisoner. His journal written during these traumatic weeks
was published by Mondadori. The photos of his return to Grozny,
just like his other reportage are available through
Contrasto.
