"Tommaso Bonaventura was born in Rome on March the 20th in 1969.
He has a classical education and a big passion for photography. Thanks to his passion, in 1987, he was awarded of a grant to attend a triennial course of advanced photography at the European Institute of Design in Rome, where he graduates with the highest grades. In the same year, he applies to the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. The courses focus on in depth studies of modern and contemporary art, art criticism and iconological analysis.
During 1991, he moves to London for a training period in different photographic studios.
In September 1992, he begins his work in photojournalism collaborating for several photo agencies and main Italian newspapers. Between 1993 and 1995 he realizes a photographic research on Molise region, with the intent to illustrate the reality and contradictions of this area.
During 1996, he collaborates with the European Institute of Design in Rome, lecturing about the origins of photographic portrait and its relation with the painting of Nineteenth Century.
At the same time he begin his degree thesis on Mario Giacomelli's work and personality. Over the last few years he has been shooting several reportages and portraits for national and International magazines. His most successful works are represented by reportages about the Danube River, East countries and his deep research of the Italian Muslim community.
Bonaventura has been carrying out for a while now in a long-term project on Christian pilgrimages in Europe, winner of the Gribaudo Prize in 2002 and of the honourable mention at the FNAC prize 2004.
A picture out of the project, portraying the pilgrimage at Velikaya River, Russian Federation, was the 1st prize winner at the World Press Photo 2005, in the "Arts and Entertainment" category.
